Representing and Aligning Similar Relations: Parts and Wholes in isiZulu vs. English
نویسنده
چکیده
Ontology-enabled medical information systems are used in Sub-Saharan Africa, which require localisation of Semantic Web technologies, such as ontology verbalisation, yet keeping a link with the English language-based systems. In realising this, we zoom in on the partwhole relations that are ubiquitous in medical ontologies, and the isiZulu language. The analysis of part-whole relations in isiZulu revealed both ‘underspecification’—therewith also challenging the transitivity claim— and three refinements cf. the list of common part-whole relations. This was first implemented for the monolingual scenario so that it generates structured natural language from an ontology in isiZulu. Two new natural language-independent correspondence patterns are proposed to solve non-1:1 object property alignments, which are subsequently used to align the part-whole taxonomies informed by the two languages.

Representing Natural Kinds by Spatial Inclusion and Containment
Biomedical terminologies lack a clear-cut understanding of the semantics of part-whole relations. In order to design a conceptually adequate ontology for the biomedical domain, we investigate different forms of ontological dependencies between parts and wholes. We then suggest, for natural kinds at least, a move away from modeling the relations between parts and wholes and advocate instead conc...
متن کاملEssential , mandatory , and shared parts in conceptual data models ?
This chapter focuses on formally representing life cycle semantics of part-whole relations in conceptual data models by utilizing the temporal modality. We approach this by resorting to the temporal conceptual data modeling language ERV T and extend it with the novel notion of status relations. This enables a precise axiomatization of the constraints for essential parts and wholes compared to m...
متن کاملStatistical learning of parts and wholes: A neural network approach.
Statistical learning is often considered to be a means of discovering the units of perception, such as words and objects, and representing them as explicit "chunks." However, entities are not undifferentiated wholes but often contain parts that contribute systematically to their meanings. Studies of incidental auditory or visual statistical learning suggest that, as participants learn about who...
متن کاملSymptomatology of Peripheral Neuropathy in an African Language
The terminology used to describe neuropathic pain appears to be conserved across languages, which facilitates the translation of validated neuropathic pain screening tools into other languages. However, this assumption has not been assessed in an African language. Therefore we investigated the terminology used by 54 patients whose native language was isiZulu, a major Bantu language of Africa, w...
متن کاملFormalising Temporal Constraints on Part-Whole Relations
Representing part-whole relations and effectively using them in domain ontologies and conceptual data models poses multiple challenges. In this paper we face the issue of imposing temporal constraints on part-whole relationships, introducing a way to account for essential and immutable parts (and wholes) in addition to the usual mandatory parts (and wholes). Our approach is based on i) an expli...
